Renee Ramos hit a two-run home run and Allison Gage pitched five and two thirds shutout innings to lead the Boston College softball team to a 3-1 win on Friday night over the College of Charleston.
The win gives the Eagles a doubleheader sweep in day one of the Central Florida Tournament down in Orlando, Fla.
Boston College now moves to 7-4 on the season which is the best 11 game start to a season for the Eagles since 1998 when they went 9-2.
A big reason for the Eagles early season success has been the longball. The Eagles have already hit 12 home runs on the season, and they are 5-1 in games this season when they hit a home run.
BC opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning doing all of its damage with two outs. Senior Dani Weir kept the inning going with a single up the middle to set the table for Ramos, and she didn't disappoint. She turned on a pitch pulling it down the left-field line for a two-run home run to give the Eagles a quick 2-0 lead after one inning of play.
The Eagles added to their lead in the bottom of the third inning as Brittany Wilkins walked to lead off the inning, and wound up scoring thanks to two College of Charleston miscues. Wilkins moved to second base after a sacrifice bunt by Rene Delagrammaticas. She moved to third base after a throwing error on a Weir groundball, and then scored moments later on a wild pitch to give BC a 3-0 lead after three.
That would be all the support Gage (2-0) would need as she breezed through the College of Charleston's lineup on her way to her second win of the season. She finished the game going five and two thirds innings allowing only five hits and striking out two.
A key stat for the BC pitching staff this year is when they allow two runs or less to their opponent they are 7-0 for the season.
Boston College returns to the field tonight for day two of the Central Florida Tournament starting at 6 p.m. when they will take on Central Florida.
