BROOKLINE, Mass. - Senior Geoff Oxley earned his first win of the season on the mound and junior Matt Hamlet drove in two runs to lead the Boston College baseball team to a 5-4 win at Northeastern Wednesday at Friedman Diamond.
The game was a makeup of Tuesday's contest that was postponed due to rain. The Eagles were originally scheduled to travel to Rhode Island Wednesday, but that game was postponed due to flooding in the area.
BC (11-13) scored two runs in the top of the first inning and led the rest of the way. Hamlet walked twice, drove in two runs and scored another. Freshman Matt Watson went 2-for-3 and senior Mike Sudol had the game's only extra base hit, a triple. Senior John Spatola also had an RBI.
Oxley picked up the win after throwing 2.2 innings of no-hit baseball out of the bullpen. He walked one and struck out two. Sophomore Matt Brazis earned his fourth save of the season with a perfect ninth inning.
BC didn't waste any time and posted two runs in the top of the first. Hamlet drew a one-out walk and stole second then classmate Mickey Wiswall roped a single to put runners on the corners. He stole second to put a pair in scoring position. A passed ball allowed Hamlet to score and then Spatola drove in the other run with a groundout.
The Huskies got a run back in the bottom half of the first. Alan Pastyrnak singled through the left side and stole second, then Tony DiCesare singled to right to drive him in and cut the lead in half.
The Eagles scored two more times in the second to extend the lead to three runs. Sudol led off and blasted a triple that one-hopped the wall out in center which is 435 feet away. Freshman Brad Zapenas reached on a throwing error by the third baseman which allowed Sudol to score. Junior Garret Smith bunted himself on with a single to put runners on the corners and then Hamlet grounded out to drive Zapenas in to make it 4-1.
Northeastern loaded the bases with one out in the second inning but only came away with one run on a Matt Miller sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 4-2.
The Huskies added another run in the third to pull within one. Frank Compagnone drew a leadoff walk and got to second on a groundout. Jon Leroux then delivered a two-out RBI single to make it 4-3.
BC loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the fourth but only came away with one run on a Hamlet walk. A strikeout and a 3-6-3 double play forced the Eagles out of a big inning, but that run would prove to be the game-winner.
Northeastern got a run across in the bottom of the eighth to again pull the Huskies within one. Brendan Stokes and Leroux singled to start the inning and a sacrifice bunt moved them both into scoring position. David Gustafson grounded to score Stokes, but junior Kevin Moran stranded the tying run 90 feet from the plate.
Brazis then hurled a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save of the year.
Leroux, Logan Gillis and Jeff Dunlap each had two hits for Northeastern (6-9). Leroux also drove in a run. The Huskies' bullpen shutout BC for six innings. Chris Carmain was the first out of the pen and allowed one hit in 5.2 innings of work.
The Eagles now travel to No. 10 Clemson for a three-game ACC series beginning Friday night at 6:30 p.m.
