Six-Run Fifth Propels Baseball Past Holy Cross, 7-4

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team scored six runs in the fifth inning en route to a 7-4 win against Holy Cross Thursday in the 2010 home opener at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
The Eagles had six hits in the fifth inning and six consecutive batters reached base as the Eagles batted around the order.
Senior Robbie Anston led BC (8-12) at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and two runs. He also stole two bases. Junior Mickey Wiswall had a 2-for-4 day and classmate Garret Smith drove in two runs with a double in the fifth.
The Eagles' bullpen shut out Holy Cross for four innings after gaining the lead in the fifth. Junior Dave Laufer picked up his first win of the season after pitching 1.1 innings of scoreless ball. Freshman Hunter Gordon and junior Nate Bayuk threw 1.1 and 1.0 innings, respectively, and junior Kevin Moran closed out the game with his first save of the season.
Holy Cross pushed across a run in the top of the first to take an early lead. Brendan McCrea led off the game with a walk and got himself to third on a passed ball and a groundout. Matt Perry drove him home with a single up the middle.
BC responded with a run in the bottom of the third to tie the game. Anston bunted himself on with two outs and then sophomore Matt Hamlet was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Wiswall then hit a sharp grounder that went through the second baseman's legs to bring Anston home and make it 1-1.
The Crusaders regained the lead immediately in the top of the fourth with two runs. John Sills singled to start the inning and then Perry doubled to the wall in left field for another RBI and a 2-1 Crusader lead. Nick Ciardello followed with a single down the line in right for another run.
Holy Cross posted another run in the fifth to increase the lead to 4-1 on a Jack Laurendeau single.
Boston College scored six times in the bottom of the fifth to take the only lead it would need. Anston walked with one out and stole second to get himself into scoring position. Hamlet drove him in with an RBI single up the middle and then Wiswall and sophomore Anthony Melchionda also singled to drive in another run.
Senior John Spatola tied the game with the fourth consecutive single and then freshman Matt Watson got in on the action with an RBI single of his own to give BC a 5-4 lead.
Junior Garret Smith then added some insurance when he took a 1-0 pitch to the gap in right for two more runs to increase the lead to 7-4.
Perry went 2-for-4 for Holy Cross (4-8) with a double, run and two RBI. Ciardello also went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI. Bobby Holmes was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs in an inning of work.
BC will now host Duke for a three-game ACC series this weekend. The opener is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Friday at Commander Shea Field.
