Baseball Loses Series Finale At No. 1 Virginia, 11-1

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - No. 1 Virginia pushed eight runs across in the first three innings and went on to beat the Boston College baseball team, 11-1, Sunday at Davenport Field.
A total of 3,206 spectators came out on Sunday to watch the finale. The three-game series brought a Davenport Field record 9,642 fans through the turnstiles this weekend.
Senior John Spatola went 3-for-4 for the Eagles (7-12, 1-5 ACC) while junior Mickey Wiswall drove in the only run with his fifth home run of the season.
Dan Grovatt led Virginia (17-3, 5-1) with a 2-for-3 performance with a homer, four RBI and two runs. Phil Gosselin went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs and Jarrett Parker had a three-run triple. John Barr went 2-for-3 and scored three times.
Cody Winiarski got the win on the mound, throwing 6.0 innings and allowing one run on three hits.
Virginia wasted no time as it scored four times in the first. The Cavaliers loaded the bases with one out and then Parker sent a 3-1 pitch off the top of the wall in right-center for a bases clearing triple. Tyler Cannon drove him home with a single.
The `Hoos got two more runs in the second to increase their lead to 6-0. They loaded the bases again with no outs and Grovatt and Steven Proscia brought runs home with sacrifice flies.
In the third, Franco Valdez doubled and Barr walked to put the first two runners on and Gosselin moved them up 90 feet with a sac bunt. Grovatt brought both of them home with a two-out single to extend the cushion to 8-0.
Wiswall got BC on the board in the top of the fourth with a towering solo home run to right field.
Grovatt got that run back with a solo round-round tripper of his own in the sixth and then Gosselin added a two-run double in the seventh to make it 11-1.
The Eagles will play their first home game of the season against Hartford on Tuesday at 3 p.m. at Shea Field. BC also hosts Holy Cross on Wednesday before welcoming Duke on Friday for the first home ACC series of the year.
