Dean Shuts Down No. 13 Miami In 3-0 Win

MIAMI - Junior Pat Dean tossed eight shutout innings against No .13 Miami as the Boston College baseball team defeated the Hurricanes, 3-0, Friday night at Alex Rodriguez Park.
Dean, who confused and jammed batters all night, allowed six hits and had a season-high nine strikeouts. Only three runners were able to get into scoring position with Dean on the bump. In his last three outings against the `Canes, he is 3-0 with a 0.41 ERA - allowing one run in 22.0 innings - and has struck out 21 while walking two.
Miami entered the night averaging 9.9 runs a game.
Freshman Matt Watson produced all three of BC's runs with a pair of doubles and three RBI. Sophomore Brad Zapenas went 2-for-3 in the slot before him in the lineup and scored two of those runs.
Sophomore Matt Brazis picked up his second save of the year.
Boston College (6-6, 1-0 ACC) struck in the top of the second inning when Zapenas got himself on second base after a single and hustling 90 more feet when the center fielder misplayed the ball. Watson cashed in the run when he doubled over the center fielder's head.
Miami threatened in the bottom half of the frame with runners on first and third and nobody out but Dean got out of the jam. He got Harold Martinez swinging for the first out. Then on a 2-2 pitch, David Villasuso lined out to Dean as Scott Lawson took off for second for an easy double play.
Watson stepped up again in the fourth and put the final two runs on the board. Sophomore Anthony Melchionda reached on an error by the first baseman and then got into scoring position on a wild pitch with two outs. Zapenas drew a walk to put two men on and then Watson delivered another double to clear the bases and make it 3-0.
Brazis came on in the ninth inning and pitched himself out of a jam to seal the win. Lawson walked on four pitches to leadoff the inning and then Martinez singled to put runners on first and second. Brazis induced Villasuso to ground into a 6-3 double play to get two big outs and then a fly out sealed the win.
Chris Hernandez was saddled with the loss after a strong outing for Miami (8-4, 0-1). He tossed 6.0 innings and allowed all three runs but only one was earned. Both Yasmani Grandal and Scott Lawson had two hits.
The second game of the series will begin at 7 p.m. Saturday night and will be televised by Comcast Sports Southeast.
