The Boston College women's softball team won both of its games on day one of the Hatter Classic on Friday by defeating Albany 4-0 in the early game, and later beat host Stetson, 5-2, in game two at Patricia Wilson Field in Deland, Fl.
The two wins move Boston College to 4-2 on the season. The loss will drop Albany to 0-1, while Stetson will move to 5-5 for the year.
Boston College - 4, Albany - 0
In game one, freshman Nicole D'Argento (1-1) made her second start of her collegiate career for Boston College, and she was brilliant. D'Argento seemed much more relaxed in this start for the Eagles as she retired 18 of the first 19 batters she faced in the game.
Boston College opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning. Senior Amy Tunstall led off with a single to left-field, and then advanced to second on a pass ball. D'Argento hit a one out RBI double to right center to score Tunstall. Senior Blair Destito then hit a groundball to second base that was misplayed by Albany allowing D'Argento to score from second to make the score 2-0.
The score would stay the same until the bottom of the fifth inning when senior Dani Weir hit a two-run homerun to left field to score Rene Delagrammaticas, and make the score 4-0 after five innings. It was Weir's third longball of the season, and 21st of her career.
That was more than enough run support for D'Argento as she went the distance to get her first complete game shutout of her career. Her line for the game was seven innings pitched, two hits and nine strikeouts.
Boston College outhit Albany 7-2 in the game.
Boston College - 5, Stetson - 2
In game two, the Eagles found themselves in a classic pitcher's duel as the two teams only had one hit each after five innings of play.
Senior Taylor Peyton (2-1) and Stetson's Courtney Gunby matched each other pitch for pitch until the top of the seventh inning when the Boston College offense finally broke through.
Tunstall crushed a one out solo homerun to center field off Gunby to give Boston College the lead.
The Eagles weren't done as they added a little insurance thanks to sophomore Ali Lynette-Krech who hit a two RBI double to center field to make the score 3-0 BC.
Destito would score later on in the inning off a wild pitch, and Brittany Wilkins hit an RBI groundout to give Boston College a 5-0 lead going into the bottom of the seventh.
D'Argento came in to relieve Peyton in the bottom of the seventh. Peyton finished the game pitching six shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out three.
D'Argento ran into a little bit of trouble in the bottom of the seventh as she let up two runs with two outs, but Allison Gage came in to shut the door on a 5-2 BC win.
Tunstall was the offensive star on day the for BC as she went 3-for-6 with a homerun and two runs scored.
The Hatter Classic will continue tomorrow as the first game of the day for Boston College will be against Bethune-Cookman at 1:30 p.m.
