Baseball Loses At Auburn, 6-5, In 10 Innings

AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn's Brian Fletcher hit two home runs, including a walk-off solo shot in the bottom of the 10th, to lead the Tigers to a 6-5 win against the Boston College baseball team Friday night at Plainsman Park.
The Eagles had plenty of opportunities to score but could not come up with timely hits. Ten of the 12 men they left on base were in scoring position.
Fletcher finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI. Justin Bryant went 3-for-3 and Justin Hargett went 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Austin Hubbard picked up the win on the mound.
Junior Mickey Wiswall went 2-for-3 for Boston College with a pair of doubles and drove in four of the five BC runs. Junior Matt Hamlet and freshman Matt Watson also had two hits. Senior John Spatola hit his third solo home run of the season.
Junior Pat Dean got the start on the bump and pitched seven innings, allowing five runs on 11 hits. He struck out four and walked one.
For the third time in the first four games, BC got on the board in the top of the first inning. Senior Robbie Anston dropped the first pitch he saw over the second baseman's head and then Hamlet followed suit with a single to put runners on the corners. Wiswall cleared the bases when he roped a double down the line in right with a full count to make it 2-0.
Auburn got one of the runs back in the bottom half after Hargett led off with a double. Hunter Morris then brought him home with a triple off the base of the wall in left-center.
The Tigers took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the third when Fletcher pulled an 0-1 pitch over the high wall in left for a two-run homer. Creede Simpson had doubled to the gap in right with one out earlier in the frame.
Auburn posted two more runs in the fourth to take a 5-2 lead. Tony Caldwell walked and Bryant singled to put two men on to start the inning and Ryan Jenkins sacrificed them into scoring position. Wes Gilmer got a ball deep enough in right-center to bring a run home and then Hargett surprised the defense and bunted himself on for an RBI single.
The Eagles brought the deficit to one with a pair of runs in the sixth. Watson singled to lead off and after two outs were recorded, Hamlet walked to bring Wiswall to the plate. With a full count, he delivered when he took a pitch to the gap in left for a double and two runs.
Spatola tied the game in the seventh and forced extra innings when he took a 1-2 fastball over the fence in right field.
Neither team could push the winning run across until the bottom of the 10th when Fletcher went deep to right-center.
BC is back in action early tomorrow morning when they take on Florida Atlantic at 11 a.m. CT.
