CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior Joe Trapani scored 17 points - all in the first half - and classmate Rakim Sanders scored 15 points - including his 1000th career point - to lead Boston College to an 80-60 ACC win over Virginia Tech before 4,632 fans in Conte Forum.
Junior Corey Raji tallied 13 points and senior Tyler Roche netted 10 points for the Eagles. Sophomore Reggie Jackson registered five points, eight rebounds and a career-high 11 assists.
The Eagles shot 50.9 percent from the floor, while limiting Virginia Tech to 31.1 percent shooting. BC gained a 49-28 rebounding advantage.
BC never trailed in the contest. Led by three three-pointers from Trapani, the Eagles jumped out to a 15-2 lead just four minutes into the contest.
Virginia Tech then used a 17-7 run to narrow the margin to three points - 22-19 - with 8:41 left in the half. BC answered with a 13-1 rally - with five players scoring in this stretch - to gain a 35-20 advantage with 3:19 remaining before intermission. BC led 39-24 at the break.
The Hokies began the second half with a 9-4 run to close within 10 points - 43-33 - but BC never allowed the visitors any closer. BC led by 11 points - 56-45 - before outscoring Virginia Tech 15-6 over the next six minutes to gain a commanding 71-51 lead. Sanders began this rally with the two free throws (with 11:44 to play) that allowed him to reach the 1,000-point milestone.
BC took its biggest lead - 22 points (77-55) - on a Sanders field goal with 4:05 left. Junior Nick Mosakowski recorded his first collegiate points on a three-pointer with 37.0 seconds to play.
Game Notes: Sanders is the 36th player in program history to reach the 1,000-point milestone ... Jackson is the first BC player to record a double-digit assist total since Tyrese Rice handed out 13 assists against Hartford on Jan. 31, 2007 ... Sanders grabbed a game-high nine rebounds ... Trapani shot 7-for-11 from the field ... BC made 10 more field goals, including five more three-pointers, than the Hokies ... BC has an 8-1 record this season when holding its opponent to under 40 percent shooting from the field ... BC's 80 points is especially impressive when considering that Virginia Tech entered the game ranked second in the ACC in scoring defense by allowing 62.2 ppg.
