The Boston College softball team split its doubleheader in the Islander Classic on Saturday afternoon by defeating Centenary College 10-2 in the early game, but later fell to Texas A&M Corpus Christi, 4-2, in game two at Chapman Field in Corpus Christi, Tx.
The day's results move Boston College to 1-2 on the season, while the loss drops Centenary College to 1-3 and the win improves Texas A&M Corpus Christi to 5-3 for the year.
Boston College - 10, Centenary College - 2
In game one, Boston College jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead after three innings. The big play came in the top of the second inning for the Eagles as junior Alison Kooistra belted a two RBI triple to right center.
Senior Dani Weir opened the game up in the top of the fourth inning as she hit a three-run homerun to make the score 8-0. Weir's homerun was the first homerun of the season for BC, and it also moved her into a tie for fifth place on the Boston College career homeruns list with 19 for her career.
This is all the support senior Taylor Peyton would need as she pitched four innings of one hit ball to earn her first win of the season.
Junior Rene Delagrammaticas had a nice game for BC as well as she scored three runs, pounded out two hits and registered one RBI.
The Eagles outhit Centenary College 10-2 in the game.
Texas A&M Corpus Christi - 3, Boston College - 1
In game two, freshman Nicole D'Argento made her highly anticipated collegiate debut. She showed both glimpses of brilliance and signs of nerves in her first three innings. She struck out an impressive five batters, but she also walked five batters as well as the Eagles trailed 1-0, after three innings of play.
Boston College tied the score in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by sophomore Brittany Wilkins that drove in her classmate Lizzy Ploen all the way from first base.
D'Argento found herself in trouble again in the bottom of the fifth inning as Texas A&M Corpus Christi loaded the bases with one out on a hit, a error and a costly walk. Coach Finley decided at this point to bring in the veteran Peyton to try to keep the game tied. Peyton retired the first batter she faced on a groundout, but she couldn't get out of the jam as the Islanders got a two-RBI single to grab the lead back at 3-1 after five innings.
D'Argento's line for the game was 4.1 innings pitched, three runs (one earned), six walks and six strikeouts.
The Eagles went in order in the top of the sixth, and had a chance to tie the game in the seventh as they brought the tying run to the plate but junior Gemma Ypparila grounded out to end the game.
Errors have been costly so far this season for the Eagles as they have committed five errors in just three games that have led to six unearned runs.
Boston College wraps up the Islander Classic tomorrow as they will take on Southern University at 11 a.m.
