WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - A tying goal from Janna Anctil with three minutes remaining put Boston College back in the game, but it was Wake's Kari Walkley who scored the game winner on the last play of the overtime period to put Wake Forest up 2-1 and end BC's quest for an ACC Championship win.
With a minute remaining, the Demon Deacons forced a corner as the clock ticked down for the final play of the game. After a few shots and a volley in front of the net, Wake Forest was awarded another corner and Walkley was able to find the back of the goal to advance Wake Forest to the semifinals tomorrow against Maryland.
It was the second half before the Eagles finally lit the lamp when Anctil scored at 3:22. Courtney Tavener dribbled down the right wing and passed it across net to Anctil, who tipped it past Ruhf.
BC and Wake Forest battled up and down the field throughout the first half, with each team's man-on coverage providing aggressive play and tight defending that did not allow many scoring opportunities. BC forced two corners in the first half but the Demon Deacons' defense were able to hold down Jessica Roberts' and Jacqui Moorfield's hard shots.
In the 18th minute, BC goalie Kristine Stigas found herself in a one-on-one situation against a Wake Forest player but hung back and was able to stop the ball and kick it away for a huge save.
The Eagles defense had another big save when Carla Tamer stopped a shot and Jenny Raftery made a big clear to help BC bring it down to the Demon Deacons' goal.
Wake Forest broke the scoreless first half at 7:57 with a goal from Lizzie Rae, assisted by Kerry Ergen who took the ball down the right wing and crossed it in front of the goal for Rae to tip it into the left corner.
BC's offense kicked up the pressure for the last minutes of the first half, with a one-on-one from Janna Anctil that was stopped by Demon Deacons' goalie Kaitlyn Ruhf. To end the game, BC forced a corner for the last play of the half. Moorfield's shot was blocked but deflected to Anctil, who tried to tip in a bouncing ball but was stopped by Ruhf again. The Eagles were awarded a second corner and once again Moorfield took the shot but Ruhf's body block cleared the ball out of the circle to end the first half 1-0 Wake Forest.
The second half was more of the first, with Wake Forest's defense continually stepping up and stopping BC's shots despite an intensified offensive effort. With 12 minutes remaining, Carla Tamer received a yellow card for tripping and exited the game for five minutes to put BC down a player.
BC had seven corners to Wake Forest's four while the Demon Deacons held a slight 11-10 edge on shots. Stigas made eight saves in the contest.
BC falls to a 12-7 record while Wake Forest improves to 10-8.
