NEWTON, Mass. Freshman forward Charlie Rugg scored twice while classmate Kyle Bekker had a hand in all three goals as Boston College men's soccer earned a 3-0 non-conference win over Fairfield before 326 fans at the Newton Campus Complex.
BC (2-3-0) scored three times in the initial 45 minutes, including the game's first goal just more than three minutes into the match. The teams played a scoreless second half.
Bekker (1 goal, 2 assists) set up BC's first goal, scored its second, and tallied his second assist of the game on the third in the victory.
Rugg netted his first collegiate goal at 3:11, redirecting Bekker's feed with his right foot into an open goal.
Bekker doubled the Eagles' lead in the 35th minute with a hard left-footed strike from 22 yards into the upper portion of the goal and Rugg concluded the game's scoring less than four minutes later - at 38:14.
Rugg was on the finishing end of a feed from sophomore Edvin Worley, who received a long clearing pass into space from Bekker.
BC freshman goalkeeper Justin Luthy made five saves in 75:55 to earn his second collegiate victory. Goalkeeper Ayotunde Ogunbiyi, a junior transfer, played the final 14:05. He did not register a save in his BC debut.
The host Eagles outshot the Stags, 15-10, including a 7-3 edge in the second half.
Freshman midfielder Colin Murphy was denied a goal-scoring bid 15 seconds before halftime as his right-footed shot ricocheted off the crossbar.
Fairfield (1-3-0) totaled a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Freshman goalkeeper Michael O'Keeffe totaled three saves for the Stags, who recorded one team save in the match. Tucker Nathans stopped Kevin Mejia's strike from seven yards in the 44th minute.
Next, Boston College will play at Boston University on Friday, Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. in the Fox Soccer Channel's collegiate game of the week.
Game Notes: Bekker, who hails from Oakville, Ontario, has registered a team-high six points - two goals and two assists - in five games ... Luthy's shutout effort marked the second of his five-game career ... Boitumelo Gugushe and Luke Kelly each made their collegiate debuts in the second half while Aidan Buick, Ernie McAlister and Myles Gerraty all made their season debuts ... McAlister, who missed consecutive seasons with knee injuries, saw regular-season action for the first time since 2006.
