GREENSBORO, N.C. - Former Boston College catcher Tony Sanchez was named to the All-ACC Academic Baseball Team, announced August 6 by Commissioner John D. Swofford.
To be eligible for consideration, a student-athlete must have earned at least a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained at least a 3.00 cumulative average during his academic career.
Sanchez became the highest pick in the Major League Baseball Draft in program history when the Pittsburgh Pirates selected him with the fourth overall pick in the 2009 MLB Draft in June. Sanchez is batting .321 through 22 games with the Class-A West Virginia Power. He has hit eight doubles and two homers while driving in 20 runs.
Sanchez earned numerous plaudits in his final season in Chestnut Hill. He was one of three finalists for the 2009 Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award, presented annually to the nation's top collegiate catcher. He was named an All-American by three different outlets - including first team honors from Baseball America - and was tabbed as one of 30 semifinalists for the Golden Spikes Award, presented annually to the nation's premier amateur baseball player. He was also the first player from Boston College to be voted to the All-ACC First Team.
Sanchez's 63 runs last season are a Boston College single-season record while his 14 home runs rank third and his 79 hits are fourth.
The Miami, Fla., native established himself as one of the most productive hitters in BC history. He ranks fifth all-time at Boston College in home runs with 24 and RBI with 124, sixth in hits with 202 and eighth in runs with 125.
