Six Eagles Named Summer All-Stars

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Six Boston College baseball student-athletes have been named all-stars in their respective summer leagues, highlighted by RHP John Leonard and INF Mickey Wiswall who will play in the Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game on July 23 at Fenway Park.
Wiswall and Leonard both play for the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox. The Red Sox, which have the best record in the Cape, led all teams with seven all-stars.
Wiswall earned a starting position in the all-star game by hitting .319 in 32 games. He currently leads the league with 19 RBI and ranks second in hits (38) and doubles (7) and sixth in batting average.
Leonard has a 2-0 record on the mound. He has thrown 28.0 innings in seven games (four starts). He ranks among league leaders with a 2.55 ERA. He has recorded 22 strikeouts and issued seven walks while recording a save.
RHP Chris Kowalski was named to the Eastern All-Star Team in the New England Collegiate Baseball League as the team's closer. The NECBL All-Star Game was played on July 18 in Holyoke and Kowalski threw a perfect ninth inning. He struck out a batter in a 6-5 loss to the Western All-Stars.
Kowalski currently sports a 1.77 ERA to go along with a 1-1 record and six saves for the North Shore Navigators. He has appeared in 17 games and worked 20.1 innings, fanning 20 while walking just four batters. Opponents are hitting a mere .187 against him this summer.
INF Matt Hamlet was named the starting second baseman for the National All-Stars in the Coastal Plains League and served as the team's leadoff hitter. He went 0-for-3 in the contest which resulted in a 2-2 tie after 10 innings on July 21 in Wilmington, N.C.
Hamlet ranks third in the league in batting with a .365 average. He has started 31 games for the Gastonia Grizzlies and has three doubles and 20 RBI on the season. He has scored 18 times and is 5-for-8 on stolen base attempts.
RHP Matt Brazis and INF Anthony Melchionda were both all-stars in the Valley Baseball League. Melchionda, who started the game at third base, went 0-for-2 as his South team defeated Brazis' North side in a pitchers' duel, 1-0, on July 12 in Woodstock, Va.
Brazis did not appear in the game but was named to the VBL All-Star Team that competed in the inaugural Mid-Atlantic Summer Classic All-Star Game. The game was played in Waldorf, Md. against the all-stars of the Cal Ripken, Sr. Collegiate Baseball League on July 15. The Valley used its two 28-man rosters from the VBL All-Star game to select its 28-man roster for the Mid-Atlantic Summer Classic.
Brazis was saddled with the loss in a 2-1 game after allowing an unearned run in his inning of relief. He struck out two of the three batters he retired.
Brazis has a 3-1 record this season for the Winchester Royals. He has appeared in nine games with four starts and has a team-leading 2.22 ERA. In 28.1 innings of work, he has struck out 32 and walked 12 while opponents are hitting .224 against him.
Melchionda is third on the Rockbridge Rapids with a .283 batting average. He has appeared in 31 games with 30 starts and has five doubles, a triple, two homers and 24 RBI.
