NCAA Championship Bracket
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team didn't have to wait long to find out and for the first time in 42 years, the Eagles are going dancing. BC was selected to the field of 64 teams on Monday in the 2009 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship.
BC (33-24) earned the No. 3 seed in the Austin Regional with top-seeded and host Texas (40-13-1). Texas State (41-15) was awarded the second seed and Army (34-19) is the fourth seed.
The Eagles will open the regional with Texas State on Friday and will play at 1 p.m. CT at Texas' UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The four-team regionals are a double-elimination bracket that spans from May 29-June 1.
"Obviously, we are thrilled to be in this position to play in the tournament for the first time in 42 years," head coach Mik Aoki said. "We are excited about the challenge of playing in a great regional and playing at one of the really storied programs in college baseball. To have the opportunity to play in a regional at the University of Texas is really exciting and I couldn't think of a better way to establish a tradition here at BC of going to the tournament year-in and year-out."
This year's at-large selection to the NCAA Championship is the first for Boston College since 1967 and its 10th in program history. The Eagles are 16-19 overall in NCAA tournament play and have advanced to the College World Series four times (1953, 1960, 1961, 1967).
"I am absolutely elated," fifth-year senior and co-captain Harry Darling said. "I shed a tear or two when we were all jumping around. It's been something we have been working for in my five years and especially this year. It's been a goal every season and to see it finally come true is amazing. It's a dream. It's an absolute dream. I couldn't be happier for the guys, the staff and everybody involved."
