CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - North Carolina's Matt Harvey threw 8.2 innings of shutout baseball as the No. 4 Tar Heels beat Boston College, 8-1, on Senior Day at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
Harvey was one out away from a complete game shutout but consecutive pinch-hit doubles by senior Harry Darling and sophomore Sam Shaughnessy gave the Eagles their only run in the ninth. Harvey scattered seven hits and struck out four for the win.
Ben Bunting led North Carolina (41-14, 19-10 ACC) at the plate with three hits, two RBI and two runs. Four other players had two hits apiece while Levi Michael drove in two. Mark Fleury scored three times and had two hits including a solo home run.
North Carolina put a run on the board in the top of the first when Garrett Gore dropped the first pitch he saw in front of the left fielder for an RBI single.
The Tar Heels extended their lead in the second with two more runs. Mike Cavasinni forced a leadoff walk and Jacob Stallings used a bunt single to put the first two batters on base. Bunting failed on his sacrifice attempt for out number one but Ryan Graepel made up for it with a single to center for another run.
Dustin Ackley was caught looking at strike three on the outside corner for the second out but Kyle Seager got another run home with a bloop single to put UNC up 3-0.
UNC tacked on two more runs in the fourth to pull ahead, 5-0. With the bases loaded and two down, Michael stepped to the plate and singled to drive in two runs.
North Carolina pushed across single runs in the fifth and seventh innings to extend the lead to 7-0. In the top of the ninth, Fleury hit the first pitch of the frame over the wall in right-center to make it 8-0.
Boston College (31-23, 13-15 ACC) will begin the quest for the 2009 ACC Championship next Wednesday, May 20. It marks the first time that the Eagles will compete in the league championship.
