CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team will face defending champion Massachusetts in the opening round of the Beanpot Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton.
Boston College is 24-11-1 all-time in the Beanpot dating back to 1990. The Eagles have captured a total of eight Beanpot titles with their last one coming in 2006.
In last season's meeting in the Beanpot Championship at Fenway Park, UMass' Mike Dicato had a no-hitter and a 4-0 lead entering the ninth inning. Junior Tony Sanchez broke up the no-hitter with the first hit of the game and then sophomore Mickey Wiswall had an RBI single following an Eric Campbell fielder's choice to cut the lead in half. Junior John Spatola would bring home another run with a sac fly, but BC left runners on first and second to end the game.
BC advanced to the championship game last year with a 13-6 win against Northeastern. The Eagles have been in the Beanpot Championship game in each of the last three seasons. In 2007, Boston College lost to Northeastern 2-0 in the title game, but took down Harvard, 10-2, in the final game in 2006.
Boston College will throw sophomore Pat Dean on the mound to face the Minutemen. Dean is currently 4-1 with a 4.00 ERA. In his last 18.0 innings, he has allowed just two earned runs for a scant ERA of 1.00. He has struck out 22 and walked one during that span dating back to March 21.
UMass will be throwing Garret Butt who is 0-0 with a 5.17 ERA. He only has one start on the season which came on March 25 at Hartford. He threw 4.2 innings and allowed a pair of runs on six hits.
The consolation and championship games will be played next Monday, April 13 at Fenway Park. The consolation game is scheduled for 2:05 p.m. while the championship is slated for 5:05 p.m. All tickets are general admission and cost just $5. To purchase tickets, please click here.
