CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College baseball team scored three times in the bottom of the eighth with a tie game and senior Harry Darling delivered the game-winning hit as the Eagles beat Quinnipiac, 13-10, on Tuesday with record-setting heat at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
Darling also added another RBI on a sacrifice fly. Sophomore Matt Hamlet was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate with two doubles and three runs. Both of those numbers are career highs. Juniors Robbie Anston and John Spatola both had three hits in the game. Anston also had an RBI and three runs with a double while Spatola had a two-run homer.
Four other Eagles had multi-hit games. Redshirt freshman Andrew Lawrence went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs while also robbing the Bobcats of runs when he brought back a ball from behind the fence in left field.
Sophomore Kevin Moran picked up his fourth win of the season on the bump after working 1.1 innings and allowing just one runner.
Quinnipiac scored a run in the top of the first to take an early lead. Chris Migani walked to leadoff the game and then Bryn Doyle singled to put runners on the corners with nobody out. Brian Monack got the run in from third with a sac fly to center.
The Eagles responded with five runs of their own in the bottom half of the first. Anston singled to leadoff the inning and then stole second to get himself into scoring position. Lawrence got him home with a single to right to tie the game quickly.
Sophomore Mickey Wiswall walked to keep the inning going and then junior Mike Belfiore doubled to the gap in right to clear the bases and put BC up 3-1. He was out trying to take third base on the throw to the infield.
Hamlet doubled with two outs and then Spatola went with a 1-2 pitch the opposite way for his third home run of the season to put BC up 5-1.
In the top of the third, Monack and Mike Marmo hit consecutive doubles and then Gabe Guerino singled through the right side of the infield to plate two more runs and cut the lead to two runs, 5-3.
In the bottom half, Hamlet singled through the left side with one out and then Spatola singled to put runners on the corners. Darling brought Hamlet home with a sac fly to left and then freshman Brad Zapenas doubled to the gap in left for another run to extend the BC lead to 7-3.
Lawrence continued the rally with an RBI single to right and then Wiswall roped the first pitch he saw to left for another run to make it 9-3 Eagles.
Quinnipiac's Bryn Doyle got two of those runs back for the Bobcats in the fourth when he delivered a two-out, two-RBI double to the gap in left. Brian Monack then reached on an error and Doyle was able to score on the play to pull the Bobcats within three, 9-6.
Gabe Guerino kept the inning going when he dropped a single in front of the center fielder for the final run of the inning.
BC added another run in the fifth. Anston took the first pitch he saw in the frame and doubled to the gap in left and then Lawrence got him to third with a ground ball to the right side. He would eventually score on a wild pitch to put the Eagles back up three runs, 10-7.
Three consecutive singles in the top of the eighth brought home Quinnipiac's eighth run. Monack came up with the RBI single when he chopped a ball through the right side of the infield. Marmo walked on four pitches to load the bases with two outs and Guerino also drew one to force a run home and pull the Bobcats within a single run, 10-9.
Quinnipiac would tie the game on a wild pitch before the inning ended.
Hamlet's fifth hit of the game was a double to the gap in left to leadoff the bottom of the eighth. Spatola moved him over to third with a fly out to the warning track in center and then Darling chopped a 2-1 pitch back up the middle for an RBI single to give the lead back to the Eagles, 11-10.
Zapenas singled in front of the left fielder to put runners on the corners with one out and then Anston recorded an infield single for another run to make it 12-10. Lawrence used a sac fly to center to bring home the third run of the inning.
The Bobcats (13-26) were led by Doyle who went 3-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Monack had two hits, two RBI and three runs scored while Guerino went 2-for-3 with three RBI. Ben Farina also recorded two hits.
Boston College (27-17) is back in action tomorrow when it hosts Dartmouth, who will play in the Ivy League championship this weekend. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
