CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Freshman Mike Dennhardt tossed 8.0 shutout innings to lead the Boston College baseball team to a 3-0 win against Dartmouth on Wednesday at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
Dennhardt struck out 11 batters in his outing which is a career high. He scattered five hits and did not allow a walk while improving to 5-0 on the season. He allowed just two runners to reach second base - one in the first inning and then one in the eighth. He retired nine-straight hitters after allowing a leadoff single in the first and there were three innings in which he struck out two batters.
Sophomore Nate Bayuk came on in relief with one out in the ninth in a bases loaded jam. He picked up his first save of the year after striking out Dartmouth's two best hitters to end the threat.
Juniors Robbie Anston and Tony Sanchez and redshirt freshman Andrew Lawrence each had two hits in the game. Sanchez was 2-for-2 with two walks. Sophomore Mickey Wiswall hit a two-run double and senior Mike Augustine picked up what would prove to be the game-winning run with an RBI single early in the game.
The Eagles got on the board with Augustine's single in the second inning. With two outs, sophomore Matt Hamlet doubled down the line in right and then Augustine dropped a ball in front of the sliding left fielder to score Hamlet and put BC on top, 1-0.
BC picked up its other two runs in the third thanks to a Wiswall double. Lawrence beat out a chopper up the middle for a single and then Sanchez walked to put two men on with one out. Wiswall then ripped the first pitch he saw and snuck it inside the right field line for a two-RBI double to extend the lead to 3-0.
Dartmouth's only real threat came in the top of the ninth when they loaded the bases with one out. Bayuk got the call from the pen and ended the game with the Big Green hanging on base after striking out Joe Sclafani and Nick Santomauro on just eight pitches.
Boston College returns to ACC action this weekend when it hosts No. 13 Miami for three games. The first game of the series is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Friday at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
