DURHAM, N.C. - Another solid performance by Duke on the mound and at the plate allowed the Blue Devils to take the second game of the series from the Boston College baseball team, 9-2, on a hot Jack Coombs Field Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Mickey Wiswall led Boston College by going 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, an RBI and a run. Redshirt freshman Andrew Lawrence went 2-for-4 with a double while junior Barry Butera had the other RBI.
Nate Freiman went 2-for-4 for Duke with a home run and two RBI. Jake Lemmerman added a three-run homer while Jeremy Gould and Will Piwnica-Worms both had two hits and an RBI.
Andrew Wolcott worked 7.0 innings and allowed two runs while scattering seven hits to pick up the win.
After three scoreless innings, BC got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the fourth. Wiswall nailed a leadoff double to start and then junior Mike Belfiore moved him to third with a groundout. Butera then ripped the first pitch he saw at the first baseman who was drawn in, but he couldn't handle it and Butera was awarded a single and an RBI to give BC a 1-0 lead.
Duke got the run back immediately when Freiman led off the bottom of the fourth and launched a 1-2 fastball over the wall in left for a solo home run.
The Eagles put up another run in the fifth to regain the lead. Lawrence drove a 1-1 pitch off the wall in left-center for a double and with two outs, Wiswall came through with a single through the right side and Lawrence beat the throw to the plate to put BC back on top, 2-1.
The see-saw battle continued as the Blue Devils posted three runs in the bottom half of the inning to go ahead for the first time. Tim Sherlock singled past the diving Belfiore at first to leadoff and then Piwnica-Worms drove a 3-1 pitch off the wall in left-center for a triple and another run to tie the game again, 2-2.
Ryan McCurdy then laid down a successful squeeze and reached first to put Duke ahead for the first time, 3-2. Gabriel Saade sacrificed him up to second base and then he got to third on a fly out to right that was the second out. After a walk to Freiman put runners on the corners, Gould singled through the left side to put the Blue Devils up two runs, 4-2.
Duke scored five more times in the bottom of the seventh to pull away for good. Saade led off with a walk and then stole second to get himself into scoring position. Matt Williams moved him over to third with a groundout to the right side and then Freiman drove him home with a single to left to cushion the lead to 5-2.
A walk to Alex Hassan put runners on first and second with two down and then Lemmerman homered on a 1-2 curveball to put Duke on top, 8-2. Two fielding errors and a hit batsman allowed Duke to tack on another run before the end of the inning to make it 9-2.
Boston College (25-17, 10-11) will look to salvage a game in the series tomorrow when it takes on Duke (29-16, 12-11 ACC) in the finale at 1 p.m.
