DURHAM, N.C. - Duke's Matt Williams went 3-for-4 at the plate with two home runs and four RBI as the Blue Devils beat the Boston College baseball team, 12-2, on Friday night at Jack Coombs Field.
Nate Freiman had a 3-for-3 day at the plate with a home run and two RBI. Alex Hassan, Jake Lemmerman and Will Piwnica-Worms all had two hits while Piwnica-Worms also hit a homer. Christopher Manno got the win on the mound after throwing 7.0 innings and allowing two runs on four hits. He struck out 10 on the evening.
Junior Tony Sanchez belted his 13th home run of the season which was Boston College's only offensive output of the night. That ties him for fourth in the Eagles' record book for a single season with Steve Langone.
Junior Mike Belfiore picked up a pair of doubles on the day as well.
The Blue Devils got on the board right away in the bottom of the first with a pair of runs. Williams walked with one out and then Freiman pulled a 2-2 pitch for a single to put runners on the corners. With two outs in the inning and men at first and second, a pitch got past Sanchez and then Hassan singled to put Duke up 2-0.
Duke added another run in the second inning when Piwnica-Worms took a 1-2 curveball over the fence in left for a homer.
The Eagles (25-16, 10-10 ACC) cut into the lead in the top of the third with Sanchez's two-run homer. Sophomore Matt Hamlet kept the inning alive with a two-out walk and then Sanchez lifted the first pitch he saw over the 400-foot marker in dead center to pull BC within a run, 3-2.
Williams and Freiman responded with back-to-back homers to leadoff the bottom of the frame to get the lead back to three runs, 5-2.
Duke (28-16, 11-11 ACC) then put up six runs in the bottom of the fourth to put the game out of reach, highlighted by a Williams three-run home run. The Blue Devils added their 12th run in the seventh when Freiman hit a sac fly to center field.
Game two of the series will be played on Saturday at Jack Coombs Field at 2 p.m.
