AMHERST, Mass. - Massachusetts belted five home runs on the day to take down the Boston College baseball team, 12-8, on Wednesday afternoon at Earl Lorden Field.
Mike Gedman hit two of the home runs in a 3-for-5 day at the plate. He finished with three RBI and also picked up the save after throwing 3.0 scoreless innings. Sam Boone went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBI while Adam Tempesta also went deep and had two runs batted in. Kyle Multner hit the other home run for the Minutemen (11-19).
Redshirt freshman Andrew Lawrence went 2-for-3 for the Eagles (23-13) with a double, RBI and a run scored. Sophomore Mickey Wiswall was 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI while junior Barry Butera drove in two.
Boston College jumped out to the early lead with two runs in the top of the first. With one out, Lawrence drove an 0-1 offering up the middle and then junior Tony Sanchez walked to put two men on. Wiswall then took an 0-2 pitch back up the middle for a single. The ball got past the center fielder, allowing both Lawrence and Sanchez to score to put BC up 2-0.
UMass scored two of their own in the bottom half when Tempesta pulled the first pitch he saw over the fence in left for a two-run homer.
The Eagles added two more runs in the top of the second to regain the lead, 4-2. Sophomore Mike Sudol singled to leadoff and after a fly out, freshman Brad Zapenas reached on an error by the third baseman. Sudol and Zapenas both ended up in scoring position following the error and then junior Robbie Anston singled through the right side to plate Sudol and make it 3-2 BC. Lawrence followed up with a double down the right field line to put the Eagles back up two runs.
Mike Gedman got a run back on the first pitch of the bottom of the frame with a home run to right-center.
UMass scored four times in the bottom of the fourth to give it a 7-4 lead. Matt Gedman singled through the right side with one out and then Multner homered to left-center to put the Minutemen up for the first time in the game, 5-4. Boone then took the first pitch on the next at-bat off of the scoreboard in left to add to the UMass lead, 6-4.
Later in the inning with two down, Brian Baudinet singled through the left side and reached second on an error. Jim Macdonald then doubled to score Baudinet to push the lead to three runs.
BC got two of those runs back in the top of the fifth to pull within a run. Wiswall led off the inning and reached on an error and got to third on a balk and a wild pitch. Butera walked to put runners on the corners with nobody out and then took second on a wild pitch following a strikeout.
Sudol got a run home with a sacrifice fly to left and then the left fielder dropped an easy fly ball that would have ended the inning, but instead allowed Butera home to cut the BC deficit to one run, 7-6.
Massachusetts put up three more runs in the fifth to add to the lead, 10-6. Tom Conley singled up the middle with one out and then Matt Gedman walked to put a pair of men on base. Multner walked after Gedman to load the bases and then Boone singled up the middle to plate two runs and extend the lead to 9-6. Tempesta got the other run home with a sac fly to center.
BC scored a pair of two-out runs in the sixth to pull back within two. Sanchez started the rally with a double and then Wiswall walked. Butera was first-pitch swinging when he stepped to the plate and doubled to the gap in left to clear the bases and pull BC within two, 10-8, but that is as close as the Eagles would get.
UMass tacked a run in both the bottom of the sixth and eighth innings to ensure the win.
Boston College is home this weekend as it hosts nationally-ranked Virginia for a three-game ACC series. The weekend opens on Friday with a 2:30 p.m. scheduled first pitch.
