Nashville, Tenn. - The Boston College softball team (6-8, 0-0 ACC) swept a doubleheader against Belmont by scores of 6-2 and 5-1, snapping a five-game losing streak.
The Eagles were led by the pitching efforts of Taylor Peyton (4-5) and Allison Gage (2-1), who combined to allow just two earned runs in 14 innings of work.
BC-6, Belmont-2 - Trailing 1-0, the Eagles scored in the top half of the second inning on a Brittany Wilkins RBI single, and in the third on a home run by Peyton, her first of the season.
BC improved their margin in the top of the fourth inning with more clutch hitting by Wilkins and Peyton. With runners on second and third, Wilkins hit a single to right field, giving the Eagles a 4-1 lead. Peyton followed two batters later with an RBI single to make it 5-1.
Belmont added a run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 5-2, but Alison Kooistra hit her first home run of the year to give the Eagles a comfortable 6-2 lead.
Peyton pitched seven innings, allowing five hits and two runs (one earned), while walking two batters while striking out four.
BC-5, Belmont-1 - Allison Gage took a shutout into the seventh inning, and the Eagles scored five runs to support the strong pitching effort from the sophomore.
The BC offense got things going in the top of the third inning, when Ali Lynette-Krech hit a one out double. With two outs, Lynette-Krech would score on a Belmont error which also allowed Irene Delagrammaticas to reach base. Amy Tunstall would single her home in the next at-bat to put the Eagles up 2-0.
In the top of the fifth inning, the Eagles put runners on first and third base on back-to-back singles by Wilkins and Delagrammaticas. Amy Tunstall followed with a three-run home run , her first of the season, to put the Eagles out in front 5-0.
The lead was more than enough for Gage, who pitched seven innings allowing three hits, and one earned run while walking three and striking out eight.
The Eagles will continue competition in Tennessee with a game against Chattanooga tomorrow at 4 p.m.
