CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Sophomore Pat Dean tossed 6.0 scoreless innings and scattered five hits as the Boston College baseball team beat Northeastern for the second time this season, 11-2, on Tuesday afternoon at Eddie Pellagrini Diamond at Commander Shea Field.
Dean struck out seven and didn't allow a walk in his outing and improved to 3-1 on the year.
At the plate, junior Robbie Anston went 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and an RBI. Sophomore Matt Hamlet had a hit and drove in a career-high three runs while classmate Garret Smith recorded two runs and two RBI. Freshman Brad Zapenas went 2-for-3 with a double, two RBI and a run.
Juniors Mike Belfiore and Tony Sanchez continued their power streak as both hit a solo home run in the game. Belfiore has now hit five home runs in the last four games and has six on the season. Sanchez smashed his eighth homer of the year and has three in the last four contests. His 18 career home runs ranks eighth on the all-time BC list.
Northeastern threatened in the top of the second but couldn't get a run across. James Donaldson and Brendan Stokes singled to put two men on and then a dropped fly ball in right loaded the bases for the Huskies. Smith had other plans though, robbing Frank Pesanello of a base hit with a diving catch at short and then doubling up Stokes at second. Dean then got Ryan Kemp looking at a third strike to get out of the jam unscathed.
The Eagles then rewarded the defense with three runs in the bottom of the inning to give BC an early lead. Sophomore Mickey Wiswall and Belfiore both walked to start the frame and junior Barry Butera moved them into scoring position with a sac bunt. Smith brought a run home with an infield single up the middle.
After the second out was recorded on an attempted double steal, sophomore Mike Sudol walked to put two men on again. A wild pitch moved both runners into scoring position and Zapenas cashed them in with a single to left to give BC a 3-0 lead.
The Eagles added four more runs in the fourth to build the lead to 7-0. Butera doubled over the right fielder's head after fighting off a couple of pitches to start the inning. Smith laid down a bunt and the pitcher went to third with it but Butera beat it out. Sudol then stepped to the plate and delivered a sac fly to left for a 4-0 lead.
Zapenas walked to put two men on again and Anston singled up the middle to bring home Smith and put runners on the corners. After Anston stole second, Hamlet singled to center to plate two more to put BC up 7-0.
Belfiore added another run to the lead in the fifth when he took the first pitch that Dan Zehr threw out of the bullpen out of the yard in left.
BC added yet another in the sixth to go up 9-0. Anston started the inning with a double to left and then reached third on a wild pitch. Hamlet plated him when he grounded out to the shortstop.
The Eagles posted two more in the eighth to take an 11-0 lead. Sanchez led off the inning with a solo homer to right-center. Freshman Anthony Melchionda then singled through the left side and eventually scored on a sac fly to center from Smith.
The Huskies scored twice in the top of the ninth thanks to a two-RBI single by David Gustafson. James Donaldson went 3-for-4 at the plate for Northeastern (12-9).
BC (16-9) travels to Storrs, Conn. on Wednesday for a 3 p.m. game at UConn.
