COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Sophomore Kevin Moran worked 4.2 innings of relief and allowed four hits to earn the win on Sunday as the Boston College baseball team beat Maryland, 5-2, to take the series at Shipley Field.
It was the second-straight solid outing for Moran out of the bullpen who improved to 2-0 on the year. In a 6-5 win at Northeastern earlier in the week, he worked a career-high 6.0 innings and allowed just two hits. Junior Mike Belfiore picked up his fifth save of the season after working 2.0 innings.
Four different BC players had a pair of hits on the day. Sophomore Mickey Wiswall went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and two stolen bases. One of junior Barry Butera's two hits was a solo homer in the sixth inning. Sophomores Garret Smith and Mike Sudol were the other Eagles with two hits in the game. Junior Robbie Anston scored twice.
The Eagles got on the board right away with a run in the top of the first. Anston got things started when he sent a 2-0 pitch back up the middle for a single and then got into scoring position when sophomore Matt Hamlet sacrificed him over. Anston took third without a throw after getting a great jump on Maryland's Eric Potter and then with two outs, Wiswall fouled off a few pitches and singled up the middle to give BC a 1-0 lead.
Maryland posted two runs in the second to take the lead, 2-1. Gerry Spessard and Jensen Pupa both walked with one out and then Dan Benick hit the top of the wall in center for a double that brought both runners home.
BC got both runs back in the top of the third to regain the lead, 3-2. Sophomore Garret Smith led off and chopped a single through the middle of the infield for a single and then Anston moved him up a base with a sac bunt. With two down, junior Tony Sanchez delivered a double off the wall in left to tie the game. Wiswall walked on the next at-bat and then Belfiore knocked another double off the left field wall to score Sanchez and put the Eagles back ahead.
The Eagles added a run in both the sixth and seventh innings to push the lead to three runs. Butera hit a solo home run in the sixth inning when he took a 2-1 pitch over the wall in right to extend the lead to 4-2. In the seventh, Anston started the frame with a walk and then Hamlet sacrificed him over. With two outs, Wiswall cashed in the run again with a single to center on a 0-1 count.
BC heads to Hartford on Tuesday and Holy Cross at Wednesday before hosting its first series of the season against Clemson beginning Friday night.
