The 2009 Boston College softball team was picked to finish 8th in the Atlantic Coast Conference pre-season coaches' poll, the league announced on Thursday.
Last season, the Eagles finished tied for sixth in the ACC with a 7-14 in conference play. With a 32-31 overall record, the Eagles had their best winning percentage in season since 2004. Head coach Jennifer Finley returns 14 letterwinners from last year's team and welcomes five newcomers in 2009.
North Carolina received seven first-place votes and topped the pre-season poll with 63 points. The Tar Heels posted a school-best 50-12-1 record and won the ACC regular season title with an 18-2 conference record.
Georgia Tech was tabbed for a second place finish, with 48 points.
Defending league champion Virginia Tech was picked to finish third, earning 41 points.
The Hokies were followed by NC State (38), Florida State (34), Maryland (32), Virginia (17), and Boston College (15).
The Eagles will make their season debut tomorrow afternoon, when they take on host Centenary at 3:30 pm in the first of a five-game round robin tournament in Shreveport, La.
