CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College assistant coach Steve Englert, the field manager for Harwich in the Cape Cod Baseball League, has led the Mariners to the Cape League Championship that begins Wednesday. Harwich will face the Cotuit Kettleers in a best-of-three series. Meanwhile, James MacDonald and Pat Dean pitched for the Thomasville HiToms in the clinching win of the Coastal Plains League Championship last weekend.
Englert led the Mariners to its first berth in the Cape League Championship since 1997 after defeating the Orleans Cardinals, 1-0, in 18 innings on Sunday night to sweep the series. The game lasted four hours and 26 minutes in front of 4,629 fans at Whitehouse Field. It was the first home playoff game at the facility in 11 years.
Orleans entered the playoffs with the best record in the league at 25-17-2. Cotuit is the top seed in the western division with a 24-18-2 mark. The Kettleers beat Falmouth in three games to advance to the finals.
The first game of the Cape League Championship is slated for 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Lowell Park. The second game is scheduled for Thursday at Whitehouse Field at 7:00 p.m. and the third game (if necessary) will be held on Friday.
Rising senior James MacDonald and rising sophomore Pat Dean led the Thomasville HiToms to its third-straight Petitt Cup Championship in the Coastal Plains League last weekend. MacDonald, who went 3-0 with a 2.92 ERA in the regular season, started on the mound and tossed four innings against the Florence Redwolves.
Dean picked up the win in the 7-4 victory after tossing 2.2 innings of three-hit baseball. Dean finished the regular season with a 4-2 mark in 19 appearances with a 3.93 ERA.
The pair of Eagles helped the HiToms become the first team in Coastal Plain League history to win three consecutive titles.
