Softball Sweeps Final ACC Doubleheader From Maryland

Chestnut Hill, Mass. -The Boston College softball team (31-29, 7-13 ACC) found the offensive spark it was looking for, combining for eight runs on eleven hits against Maryland (35-21, 6-13 ACC) in a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Commander Shea Field. BC swept the two games from the Terrapins by scores of 5-2 and 3-1.
Freshman Gemma Ypparila came through big for the Eagles at the plate going four for six on the day. She had two big hits in the first game, including a three-run homerun, her second of the season. She singled and notched another homerun in the second game as well.
BC-5, Maryland-2 -- Freshman Allison Gage pitched her 19th complete game of the season for the Eagles in the first game, allowing no hits through the first four innings. She faced 26 batters, allowed two runs on just three hits and struck out six in all.
Both teams went scoreless in the first two innings. Senior Carley McNary notched her first hit of the game in the top third inning. She stole second for her 15th stolen base this season. Next, sophomore Taylor Peyton and junior Renee Ramos walked to load the bases. McNary then tallied the Eagles' first run on a fielder's choice. Sophomore Dani Weir picked up her 30th RBI of the season on the play. Freshman Gemma Ypparila followed with her second homerun of the season, a three-run homerun to right field, scoring Peyton and Ramos. BC tallied a total of four runs on two hits in the inning.
In the top of the fifth inning Maryland spoiled Gage's no hitter, tallying its first run of the game on a homerun to left field. Weir then came right back with her eighth homerun of the season, coming with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning and giving the Eagles the 5-1 advantage. Maryland tacked on one more run in the bottom of the seventh, marking the final 5-2 score. In all the Eagles had six hits in the game, with McNary and Kooistra tallying multiple hit games.
BC-3, Maryland-1-- Gage (18-17) earned her second start of the day in game two against the Terrapins, giving her 33 starts this season. In the complete game she faced 26 batters, allowing one run on five hits while striking out two,
Neither team scored through the first three innings, as both pitchers combined for six strikeouts. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Peyton tallied her 15th double of the season in the first at-bat. Ramos then put BC up 2-0 with her tenth homerun of the season, scoring Peyton for her 44th and 45th RBIs on the season. With two outs, Ypparila then homered to left field for the second time in two games, marking the score at 3-0.
Maryland scored a run on three hits in the top of fifth inning but couldn't mount the comeback as the Eagles took the second game by the final 3-1 score.
The Eagles will conclude their regular season tomorrow, May 4 as they take on the Terrapins in a single game beginning at 1 p.m. at Commander Shea Field in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
