Softball Falls In ACC Home Opener

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College softball team (20-19, 2-6 ACC) was unable to find the offensive spark it needed, falling in a doubleheader against No.16-ranked North Carolina (35-7-1, 8-1 ACC) by scores of 4-0 and 6-2 Saturday at Commander Shea Field.
Freshman Allie Thunstrom came up in a big way for the Eagles in the second game. In the bottom of the sixth inning Thunstrom singled, breaking up North Carolina pitcher Danielle Spaulding's no hitter, also marking BC's first hit in the series.
UNC-4, BC-0--Freshman Allison Gage (9-11) earned her 20th start of the season and pitched her 11th complete game. In the loss she faced 33 batters, giving up three runs off of ten hits and striking out three. North Carolina started Lisa Norris (12-3), who picked up the no hitter.
The Tarheels tallied their first run in the top of the third inning off a single. They then scored three more runs in the top of the fifth inning, two stemming from a two-run homerun by junior Breanna Brown. They finished the inning ahead by the final score of 4-0.
UNC-6, BC-2-- North Carolina jumped ahead early, scoring three runs over the second and third innings. Sophomore Taylor Peyton (11-7) made the start for the Eagles, her 17th this season. Before leaving the game in the sixth inning due to injury, she faced 29 batters, giving up five runs on eight hits and striking out two. She now leads the team with 76 strikeouts.
The Tarheels tallied two more runs in the top of the sixth inning off three hits, making the score 5-0 going into the seventh inning. They scored one more in the top of the seventh inning, giving them the 6-0 advantage. The Eagles did their best to rally back in the bottom half of the inning, scoring two runs on three hits. Junior Renee Ramos and sophomore Amy Tunstall started off the inning with back-to-back singles. Pinch hitter Angela Pandolfo then singled to continue the rally. All runners advanced on a passed ball, which scored Ramos from third. Tunstall then scored on a wild pitch by Spaulding. BC was unable to score again in the inning, registering the final score at 6-2.
The Eagles will face No.16 North Carolina for the third game of the weekend series at noon tomorrow, April 6. The game will be held at Commander Shea Field.
