RALEIGH, N.C. - Boston College (20-22, 5-17 ACC) dropped the first game of a three-game series to No. 22 NC State (28-13, 13-8 ACC), 5-1, on Friday night at Doak Field.
Opportunities against NC State starter Clayton Shunick (5-4) were few and far between as the junior kept the BC bats at bay during his eight innings of work. The right-hander tallied 11 strikeouts and held the Eagles to one run on four hits.
Dan Houston (2-3) suffered the loss. The junior had a strong outing, as he scattered six hits over seven innings with five strikeouts. Nick Asselin tossed a scoreless eighth.
Eric Campbell led the BC offense with two doubles in four at bats. The junior third baseman also scored the Eagles' lone run on the evening. Garret Smith added a RBI single.
NC State first baseman Pat Ferguson lofted a one-out solo home run to right field in the bottom of the first inning to tally the first run of the game, 1-0, in favor of the Wolfpack.
BC knotted the score, 1-1, in the top half of the second. Campbell led off the second with a double to the left-center field gap. He would later come around and score on a Smith two-out RBI single to left field.
In the third, the Wolfpack used a three-run, two-out rally to retake the lead, 4-1. After Houston retired the first two batters, Ferguson lined a double off the left field wall and would score on a RBI single from Matt Payne. Jeremy Synan followed with a two-run blast to right-center field to cap off the three-run inning for NC State.
The Wolfpack tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth frame. After Houston struck out Synan, Marcus Jones and Ryan Pond drew back-to-back walks. Nick Stanley hit a seeing-eye-single through the right side to plate Jones. Houston escaped without further damage by enticing Tommy Foschi to ground into an inning ending double play.
BC is back on the diamond tomorrow night at Doak Field for the second game for the series against the Wolfpack. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
