Softball Splits In Day Two Action of NIST

Hayward, Calif. - The Boston College softball team (9-12, 0-0 ACC) continued its hot offense in day two of the National Invitational Softball Tournament, defeating Northern Iowa (10-6, 0-0 MVC), 6-2, in its first game and losing a close 6-5 decision in the bottom of the seventh inning against San Jose State (11-13, 0-0 WAC) Saturday at the Alden E. Oliver Sports Park.
Highlighting the day was the performance by sophomore catcher Dani Weir. She tallied a team-high three RBIs, going 3-for-7 at the plate.
BC-6, Northern Iowa-2-- Sophomore pitcher Taylor Peyton (5-4) recorded her seventh start of the season against Northern Iowa, pitching five strong innings. She faced 18 batters, allowed no runs on four hits and struck out three. BC junior Renee Ramos picked up her 13th and 14th RBIs in the game. She drove in Peyton in the bottom of the first inning, and was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing senior Carley McNary to score in the bottom of the sixth inning.
BC led the Panthers 3-0 heading into the top of the sixth inning. Northern Iowa got two runs of their own in the inning, but the Eagles answered with three more runs in the bottom half. Sophomore Dani Weir led the team with 3 RBIs, going 2-for-3 at the plate with a two-run double and a walk.
San Jose State 6, BC 5-- Boston College controlled the game through the fifth inning, scoring four runs. The Spartans rallied for two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, beating the Eagles by a final score of 6-5.
Freshman Allison Gage (4-8) pitched six solid innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs. Peyton, who entered the game in the middle of the sixth, picked up the loss. Weir, senior Amanda Booth and Peyton all tallied RBIs in the game. In 28 at-bats the Eagles put together the five runs off of nine hits and were walked three times.
The Eagles will face Nevada in a rematch tomorrow at 2 p.m. in the final day of tournament action.
