Baseball Falls to No. 19 Virginia, 8-6

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Jeremy Farrell hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning, which proved to be the difference as No. 19 Virginia (19-4, 5-4 ACC) held on to a 8-6 victory against Boston College (9-11, 2-7 ACC) and sweep the three-game series.
Garret Smith went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate with one RBI and two runs scored for the Eagles. Mickey Wiswall added two hits, including a RBI double and John Spatola hit his first home run of the season.
BC starter James MacDonald (2-3) went 4.1 innings with three walks and three strikeouts in the loss. Nick Asselin worked 1.2 scoreless frames out of the BC bullpen.
Matt Packer (3-0) earned the win in relief of UVa starter Andrew Carraway. The southpaw tossed three scoreless innings with three strikeouts. Michael Schwimer pitched a perfect 1.1 innings with three strikeouts to register his sixth save on the year.
The Cavaliers manufactured a run off MacDonald to score the first run of the game in the second inning. Dan Grovatt started off the inning with an infield single. He moved up to second base on a wild pitch and then advanced to third on a fly ball to center field by Jeremy Farrell. Phil Gosselin knocked in Grovatt on a ground ball to second base to take the 1-0 lead.
In the third, BC scored four times off UVa starter Andrew Carraway. Robert Anston started the rally with a walk. Smith followed with a base hit to center to score Anston. Later in the inning, Tony Sanchez hit a RBI single to right to score Smith. Spatola, who reached on a walk, scored on a sac fly to right by Eric Campbell. Wiswall plated the fourth run of the frame, Barry Butera, on a double down the right field line, to give the Eagles a 4-1 advantage.
UVa cut the deficit to one run, 4-3, in the fourth. Phil Gosselin hit a RBI single to left-center field just out of the reach of shortstop Garret Smith. Grovatt crossed home on a fielder's choice by Franco Valdes for the second run of the frame.
In the fifth, UVa put a five-spot on the scoreboard to retake the lead, 8-4. David Adams knocked in the first run of the inning with a RBI single. Farrell connected for a grand slam off reliever Pat Dean to bust the game open in favor of the Cavaliers.
Spatola hit a two-out two-run homer, his first of the season, off UVa reliever Robert Morey in the eighth. Schwimer entered the game and retired the four batters he faced to secure the Cavaliers' win, 8-6.
BC plays its first home game on Tuesday, March 25 against Hartford. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
