LANTANA, Fla. - Junior James MacDonald pitched a career-high 8.0 inning of seven-hit baseball and used a three-run home run from Tony Sanchez and solo homers from Ryan Akel and Dave Laufer to help Boston College (4-3, 0-0 ACC) defeat Notre Dame (3-3, 0-0 Big East), 7-2, Sunday afternoon at the Santaluces Sports Complex.
In 8.0 innings, MacDonald held the Fighting Irish to only two runs, one earned, on seven hits. The right-hander tallied four strikeouts to bring his record to 2-0 on the season.
The Eagles pushed across two runs in the top of the third inning thanks to a miscue by the Notre Dame defense. Mickey Wiswall led off the inning with a single to leftfield. Notre Dame starter Wade Korpi (0-1) recorded the next two outs before Marc Perdios reached on an error, which allowed Wiswall to score. Barry Butera followed with a RBI single to plate Perdios, giving BC the 2-0 lead.
The Fighting Irish answered in the bottom of the third inning, when A.J. Pollock hit a two-out RBI single to plate Evan Sharpley, to make the score, 2-1.
BC extended in the lead in the top of the fifth. Laufer collected his first collegiate hit to start the inning. Notre Dame collected two outs, before Butera recorded his second base-hit of the game. Sanchez followed with a three-run blast to left centerfield to give the Eagles a 5-1 advantage.
Akel and Laufer each connected for solo homers in the seventh and ninth innings respectively, to help extend the lead to 7-2.
Laufer and Butera each collected multi-hit games for the Eagles. Butera collected two hits, a run scored and RBI, while Laufer added a solo homer, single, two runs scored and RBI.
