Raleigh, N.C. - In their first conference action of the season, the Boston College softball team (10-14, 1-1 ACC) fell in their first game against NC State (15-13, 1-1 ACC), 8-0, and then came back to take the second game by a score of 2-1, Saturday afternoon.
Senior captains Amanda Booth, Carley McNary and Angela Pandolfo combined for three of the Eagles five hits on the day, boosting their team to an even conference record.
NC State-8, BC-0-- Freshman pitcher Allison Gage (4-9) did not allow a run in first three innings against the Wolfpack. BC senior captains Amanda Booth and Angela Pandolfo combined for two of the team's three hits in the game. Pandolfo doubled for her third hit of the season while Booth singled for her 17th hit this year. Freshman Irene Delagrammaticas had the Eagles third hit, her 12th so far this season.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, with the bases loaded, pinch hitter Mackenzie Magnum put C State up 4-0 with a home-run to center field. Gage recovered for a strong fifth inning, but allowed another four runs to score in the bottom of the sixth, giving the Wolfpack the final 8-0 edge. In the loss, Gage faced 28 batters, gave up nine hits and eight earned runs, walking one. Winning pitcher Lindsay Campana(8-10) faced 21 Eagles in six innings, striking out nine.
BC-2 NC State-1-- Sophomore Taylor Peyton (6-4) shined in the circle and behind the plate in the second game of the double-header. Picking up the win and earning her third complete game of the season, Peyton held the Wolfpack to just four hits and a run over the seven innings. She also gave BC the offensive lift they needed, driving in her fifth RBI of the season.
Both teams went scoreless until the top of the sixth inning. Booth walked in the first at-bat of the inning. Delagrammaticas then advanced Booth on a ground ball out. Peyton then doubled to left center, allowing Booth to score her 11th run of the season, putting BC up 1-0.
The Eagles scored again in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs, sophomore Dani Weir took first base on a walk. McNary took advantage of the runner, tripling to right field, scoring Weir. She picked up her first RBI and triple of the season.
The Wolfpack started to rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Kristine Bechtholdt homered in the first at-bat, but the rest of the offense fell short of a comeback, registering a final score of 2-1.
The Eagles will face the Wolfpack tomorrow at 1 p.m. for the final game of the series. Livestats will be made available through www.gopack.com.
