CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College junior catcher Tony Sanchez has been named to the 2009 Brooks Wallace Award Preseason Watch List. The Wallace Award is presented annually to the nation's top collegiate baseball player in conjunction with the College Baseball Hall of Fame induction ceremonies.
Sanchez led the Eagles with a .313 batting average, nine home runs, and 45 RBI in 2008. He also led the squad in slugging (.517) and was second in on-base percentage (.394). The Miami, Fla. native started all 53 games for Boston College.
Sanchez continued his impressive play in the Cape Cod League during the summer. As a member of the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox, he ranked ninth in the league in batting average at .326. The catcher registered six doubles, three home runs and 18 RBI. He led the Red Sox in both slugging percentage (.489) and on-base percentage (.462).
Sanchez was selected as the starting catcher for the East squad in the Under Armour-Cape Cod Baseball All-Star Game.
The 2009 Brooks Wallace Award banquet will be at 7 p.m., Thursday, July 2, in the United Spirit Arena on the campus of Texas Tech University. Last year's award went to Florida State junior catcher Buster Posey, the consensus national player of the year and a No. 5 overall draft pick by the San Francisco Giants.
The Wallace Award is a dedication to the memory of former Texas Tech player and assistant coach Brooks Wallace. He was a four-year starting shortstop from 1977 to 1980. After playing two years in the Texas Rangers organization he returned to Texas Tech as an assistant coach. In the summer of 1984 he was diagnosed with cancer and fought the disease courageously until his death in 1985 at the age of 27.
