Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Boston College fell 7-1 at home today to the University of Massachusetts.
The Minutewomen used some early breaks to put the Eagles in the hole in the first inning. Eagles ace Britney Thompson did not appear to have her best stuff, as she hit the first batter of the game while ahead in the count 1-2. The next batter reached on an infield error, bringing up UMass' Stacy Cullington. Cullington lifted a Thompson offering to deep left that deflected off of Danielle Pandolfo's glove and over the fence to score all three runs. Three batters later, Amanda Acampora hit a homerun of her own to give UMass a 4-0 lead. Thompson hit the next batter before giving way to sophomore Savana Lloyd.
UMass struck again in the bottom of the third inning, once again with the help of some BC miscues. A walk and infield error gave the Minutewomen two on with nobody out. The next batter, Acampora, singled in a run to give UMass a 5-0 lead. Three batters later, Whitney Williams ripped a two-out single that scored both runners before she was thrown out taking second.
Meanwhile, the Eagles could do little to solve UMass starter Bailey Sanders in the early going, mustering just one walk and no hits through the first three innings. With one out in the fourth, BC sent Jenna Macchi to the plate. Macchi has been on a tear of late, highlighted by yesterday's three-homerun game against Rhode Island. Macchi continued her hot streak by crushing a Sanders pitch over the left-center field fence to pull BC within 7-1.
The Eagles brought freshman Taylor Peyton over from third base to replace Lloyd in the circle to start the fourth inning, and she settled in quite nicely. Peyton spun scoreless innings in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh, despite her defense continuing to rack up errors behind her.
The five errors were undoubtedly the story of the game for Boston College, who spoiled solid pitching from Lloyd and Peyton. Sanders also deserves her cut of the credit, as she held BC to just two hits while tossing a complete game for the Minutewomen.
Boston College will be in action again over the weekend, when they host ACC rival Florida State for a three-game set. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1PM. The series will conclude Sunday at 1PM. All games will be played at Shea Field in Chestnut Hill.
