Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Eagles softball team fell 6-3 in the nightcap of today's doubleheader with Florida State University. The Eagles held a 3-0 lead midway through the contest, but could not hold on for the victory.
Senior Ashley Obrest got the Eagles going with a mammoth solo homerun to left centerfield in the first inning. Ahead 1-0, the Eagles added two more in the second. Freshman Taylor Peyton drew a walk to lead off the inning before the next batter, junior Carley McNary, was hit by a pitch. The next batter, junior Amanda Booth, singled to center, scoring Peyton. Sophomore Renee Ramos followed with what may have been a double-play ball to the second baseman, but FSU's Veronica Wootsen overthrew first base, enabling McNary to come around for the 3-0 BC lead.
Eagles starter Britney Thompson cruised through three scoreless innings, before Florida State got to her in the fourth. With two on and two out, Seminoles catcher Brittany Krbec whacked a two-run double to right-centerfield to pull FSU within 3-2.
Florida State continued their attack in the fifth inning, when Carly Wynn singled home Michelle Snyder. The next batter, Yuruby Alicart swatted a two-run homerun to centerfield, extending the Seminole lead to 5-3.
The `Noles added to their lead in the sixth inning when Amanda Moore scored from third on a caught stealing play at second base.
6-3 is how the game would end, as the Eagles were unable to get anything going in the sixth or seventh.
Melissa May went the distance for Florida State, improving to 9-4. Thompson also pitched a complete game, falling to 4-9.
The two teams face off again tomorrow at 11Am at Shea Field. The game has been moved up from a 1Pm start in order to avoid bad weather expected in the afternoon.
