Women's Track And Field Shine In Spring Opener

Dedham, Mass. - The Women's Track and Field team opened the spring outdoor season this past weekend at the Husky Invitational in Dedham, Mass. Boston College fared very well at the event, which consisted of mostly New England-area schools.
Freshman Teyhanie Boone took fourth in the 100 meter dash, followed closely by Freshman Meaghan Callahan (fifth) and Freshman Miriam Kahn (seventh). Callahan also took fifth in the 200 meter dash, with Boone right behind her in seventh.
Freshman Caitlin Bailey beat all comers in the 400 meter, with a winning time of 56.00 seconds. No one in the field was within two seconds of Bailey, though teammate Junior Alison Fogerty finished third overall.
The 800 meter run was also a success for the Eagles, as Jessica Driscoll ('10) and Nichole Lister ('09) finished second and third, respectively.
The Eagles dominated in the 1500 meter, placing the top four finishers. Junior Nikki Tufts won the event in a time of 4:32.82, and was followed, in succession, by fellow Eagles runners Kristen Coon ('07), Mary Heitkamp ('08), and Madelyn Schricker ('10).
The 5000 meter was also an Eagles showcase, as five BC women finished in the top seven. Junior Jennifer Heyde took first with a time of 17:54.77. Heyde was followed by Freshman Gretchen Andrus (third), Sophomore Medena Knespl (fourth), Freshman Jessica Rogers (fifth), and Freshman Catherine Barrett (seventh).
Sophomore Katherine Sherman won the 100 meter hurdles event with a time of 14.72 seconds. Her teammate, Tiana Riel ('08), finished fourth.
Melissa Hadfield ('10) was another winner for Boston College, claiming first in the long jump with a leap of 5.60 meters. Riel and Sherman finished second an third, respectively, with jumps of 5.46 meters and 5.33 meters.
Rosemary Guerin ('10) took third in the shot put behind a throw of 12.27 meters. Stephanie Ho ('08) finished fifth in the discus throw with a toss of 36.39 meters.
The Women's team will be in action again this weekend at the Southern Connecticut State University Invitational in New Haven, CT.
