Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College women's track and field team was victorious at this weekend's UMass Invitational, pacing the field of six northeastern squads with 192 overall points. The Eagles boasted the top finisher in nine separate events, and finished with a significant lead over second-place UMass (130 points).
The Eagles most dominant performance came in the 1500 meter run, when BC placed five of the top six runners. Sophomore Nichole Lister won the event in a time of 4:33.47. She was followed closely by senior Jessica Flinn (2nd), junior Nikki Tufts (3rd), freshman Jessica Driscoll (4th), and senior Kristen Coon (6th).
Junior Mary Heitkamp won the 400 meter dash with a time of 59.16 seconds. The only other runner within a second of Heitkamp was fellow Eagle junior Alison Fogarty, who took second. Sophomore Alicia Henry also earned team points with her fourth-place finish.
The 200 meter dash also featured an Eagle sweep at the top, with freshman Meaghan Callahan (26.15 seconds), freshman Teyahnie Boone (26.53), and Fogarty (26.66) finishing in the top three spots.
Freshman Rosemary Guerin took home first place in the Shot Put with a leading throw of 13.77 meters. Senior Brighid Marquess led the field in the Javelin, taking first with a throw of 35.58 meters.
The Eagles success continued in the Long Jump, where junior Tiana Riel (5.68m) and freshman Melissa Hadfield (5.31m) took first and second, respectively. Riel was also victorious in the 100 meter hurdles, pacing the field in 15.33 seconds.
This weekend's victory should serve as a nice tune-up for the upcoming ACC Championships, which begin tomorrow at the University of Maryland and run through the weekend (April 19-21).
