
Florida State Hands Women's Basketball First ACC Loss

CHESTNUT HILL, MA - In the first ACC match-up of the season for the Boston College women's basketball team, Florida State came into Conte Forum and walked away with a 72-53 victory over the Eagles. Boston College dropped to 10-5 and 0-1 in the ACC, while Florida State is now 12-3 overall and 1-0 in the ACC.
Eagles senior Kathrin Ress finished with 20 points and nine rebounds, while freshman Ayla Brown has 12 points and five rebounds. The Seminoles were led by Mara Freshour and Alicia Gladden with 15 points each, while freshman Jacinta Monroe added 14 points.
BC struggled offensively all night as the Eagles shot 35 percent from the floor and were out-rebounded by the Seminoles, 38-32.
Florida State built a 15 point lead at the start of the second half. The Eagles cut into the Seminoles lead with a 12-4 run when sophomore Corey Rusin (nine points) hit a three-pointer and then set up Ress inside. Florida State called a timeout and came out with an 8-2 run.
The Seminoles lead grew to 18 behind jumpers from Gladden and Freshour. The closest BC got was 14 points at 3:43 to play when Ress hit two free throws.
At the half, the Eagles were down, 34-25, as only Brown was in double figures with 10 points. Despite a seven minute drought in the middle of the half, Boston College was down only three points with 2:33 to play in the half.
Florida State pulled away from BC with a 9-2 run in the final minute of play. Monroe gave the Seminoles a four point lead on a little jump hook in the paint. Monroe increased the Florida State lead, 29-23 at 1:38 on another lay-up inside the key.
BC cut the lead to four points when Brown hit a lay-up off a feed from Sarah Marshall at 1:26. But sophomore Alysha Harvin hit a three for a 32-24 Florida State lead. Monroe gave the Seminoles a nine point halftime lead with a soft jumper in the lane with 19 seconds to play in the half.
Boston College is off until next week when the Eagles host North Carolina State, at Conte Forum on Thursday, January 11 at 7 p.m.
