Amherst, Mass. - The Boston College Eagles women's cross country team captured the UMass Invitational on Saturday with a score of 31 points. The team placed first against Maine (38 points) and UMass 54 (points) in the tournament hosted by UMass. This was the first tournament victory of the season for the Eagles.
Five Eagles finished in the top 12 runners in the 5,000-meter (3.1 mile) race. Boston College was led by senior Jessica Flinn, who placed first overall with a time of 18:21. Freshman Jessica Driscoll was third, am impressing showing for her first collegiate race, crossing in 18:36. Fellow freshmen Gretchen Andrus (seventh), Lauren Johnston (eighth) and Catherine Barrett (12th) also performed well in their first runs at Boston College. Andrus finished in 19:03, while Johnston crossed in 19:12 and Barrett finished the course in 19:36.
Boston College women's cross country will race again next weekend at the Iona Meet of Champions on September 30 at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, N.Y.
