
Men's Cross Country Finishes Second

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College Eagles men's cross country team opened the 2006 season hosting the Boston College Invitational at Franklin Park on Friday afternoon. The team finished second overall behind the Providence Friars. Providence placed first with a score of 24, while BC was close behind with 39 points. Stony Brook finished third with 67 points, while Rhode Island, Bentley and Northeastern rounded out the rest of the tournament, placing fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.
Five Eagles placed in the top 15 in the 8,000-meter (5.1 mile) event and were led by junior Patrick Mellea , who placed second overall. Mellea crossed in 24:32. Senior Mark Alizzi finished third with a time of 24:34, while sophomore David Emerson was ninth, finishing in 25:10. Sophomores Corey Ahern and James LaGreca were 11th and 14th, respectively. Ahern finished in 25:16 in the first cross country race of his collegiate career, since he redshirted as a freshman. LaGreca crossed in 26:00. Mellea, Alizzi, Emerson and LaGreca ran personal bests at Franklin Park.
All of the incoming freshmen sat out the race, but will compete next week at Umass. Sophomore Tim Ritchie also sat out because of injury, and he will open his season at the Iona Meet.
Boston College men's cross country will race again next weekend at the UMass Invitational on September 23 at 10:30 a.m.
