Brockton, Mass. - Johnny Ayers and Shawn McGill each had three hits and Terry Doyle won his third consecutive ACC game as the Eagles defeated Maryland,9-4, in game two of its final home series at Campanelli Stadium in Brockton, Mass.
The Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as the table-setter Ayers led off the game with a single to left. After a Jared McGuire walk, Dave Preziosi laid down a bunt and that would be mishandled, allowing Ayers to score and McGuire to move to third base.
McGill remained hot, singling to right to score McGuire and giving him 13 hits in his last 20 at-bats. Eric Campbell then plated Preziosi with a sacrifice fly to put BC ahead 3-0.
Maryland countered in the fourth, using a walk from Doyle and two base hits to center to load the bases. Another walk by Doyle to Mike Murphy put the Terps on the board and a fielder's choice groundout by Dan Benick made the score 3-2. Steve Braun then tied the score with a sacrifice fly to center.
Ayers added his third hit of the game in the fourth and pushed Jett Ruiz to second after Ruiz was hit by a pitch to start the inning. McGuire came through with his second RBI, drilling a single to right center and sending Ayers to third base. Preziosi sent Ayers home on a squeeze bunt to third, allowing BC to retake the lead, 5-3.
McGill solidified the win in the sixth when he laced a single to right field for his third hit and two more RBIs, scoring McGuire. Ryne Reynoso blasted a solo shot to right in the seventh and Preziosi picked up an RBI in the eighth, giving BC the 9-4 victory.
Doyle pitched six innings to move his record to 5-4 and Ted Ratliff threw the last three frames for his first save of the season. McGill, who is 15 for his last 24 and holds a 13 game hitting streak, was Fox Sports Net 'Player of Game' in BC's first appearance on FSN's 'ACC Game of the Week'.
The Eagles and Terrapins will play the rubber game of their three-game series at Shea Field in Chestnut Hill on Sunday at 1 p.m. Sunday's contest marks the Eagles' final home game of the season, and BC's four seniors will be honored prior to the game in the annual "Senior Day" ceremony.
