Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Florida State escaped two bases loaded jams and rode a pair of solo home runs to edge Boston College in game two of the weekend series at Chestnut Hill, 4-2.
Down 3-2 in the seventh, Shawn McGill walked to start the inning and was sacrificed to second by Eric Campbell. Follwing a Jett Ruiz infield single, Pete Frates loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Joseph Ayers then popped up an attempted suicide squeeze and FSU catcher Dan Diaz made a spectacular diving catch, tagging out McGill as he made his way toward home for the double play.
The Eagles loaded the bases again in the eighth, but Seminole relief pitcher Matt DiBlasi induced a 6-3 double play to end the inning and halt the BC comeback.
Dan Houston started for the Eagles and was sharp in his seven innings of work, striking out seven, while allowing four hits and surrendering three earned.
After Houston cruised through the first three innings, facing the minimum, FSU offensive catalyst Shane Robinson put himself in scoring position with a double down the left field line. He would advance to third on a wild pitch and score on a sac fly to right for a 1-0 lead.
In the sixth, FSU grabbed a 3-0 lead on back-to-back solo home runs by Buster Posey and Ryne Malone, but the Eagles battled back in its half of the inning.
With two outs, Johnny Ayers was hit by a pitch and Ryan Hutchinson followed with a single. After both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch, Jared McGuire singled to drive in two. McGuire finished the day 3 for 4 with two RBIs.
After BC squandered opportunites in the seventh and eighth, Seminoles reliever Luke Tucker finished the Eagles off in the ninth.
BC out-hit the visitors 9-4, as the Eagle relief pitching held the Noles hitless in the final two frames.
The final game of the series will take place tomorrow at 1 p.m at Shea Field in Chestnut Hill.
