Softball Falls 6-0 to Massachusetts

Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College softball squad fell 6-0 on Tuesday, April 18, at BC's Shea Field. The Eagles now stand at 16-21 on the season and will host Boston University on Thursday, April 20. Elena Ferrero led the Eagles offense with two hits, while Jenna Macchi played a strong defensive game, making multiple diving plays.
After one inning, the Minutewomen were ahead 3-0 with hits from Amanda Morin, KJ Kelley and Lauren Proctor. Kelley's double drove in Morin and Candice Molinari. The Eagles had three bases runners in the bottom of the inning, as Kimmy Hopkin was walked and Jenna Macchi reached on a fielder's choice. Ashley Obrest's single put runners on first and second, but UMass' Brandie Balschmitter struck out Renee Ramos to end the inning.
In the top of the second, Ashley Obrest and Jenna Macchi got the first out as UMass' Lesley Ferrara was caught off the base. The Eagles ended the inning with another strong defensive play from Macchi, as the junior made a diving catch and throw to first base. In the bottom half, Elena Ferrero singled and advanced on an error, while Angela Pandolfo reached first base on a different error. Balschmitter struck out her fourth batter of the game to end the inning.
The Minutewomen tacked on another run in the third frame with a home run from Amanda Acampora. Macchi continued her solid defensive work for the Eagles with back-to-back diving catches, the latter ended the inning.
Savana Lloyd came in on the mound in the bottom of the fourth inning, giving up no hits. After giving up a double in the top of the fifth, Lloyd struck out back-to-back runners. UMass' Lauren Proctor hit a single along the left line to drive in Candice Molinari.
The Minutewomen added a sixth run in the sixth inning, when a Molinari single drove in Amanda Morin. Morin had reached base on a triple to centerfield.
Ferrero collected her second hit of the day in the bottom of the seventh with a single to centerfield. Amanda Brooks came in to pinch run for Ferrero, and Britney Thompson hit a single to right field to put runners on first and second. Pandolfo reached on a fielder's choice, as Balschmitter threw to third to get Brooks, the lead runner, out on the play.
The Eagles host BU on Thursday, April 20 at 3:00 p.m. Boston College played BU earlier in the season, winning 7-4 on a Elena Ferrero grand slam.
