Charleston, S.C. - Jett Ruiz was a combined 5 for 10 as Boston College defeated Charleston Southern 5-2 and 15-10 in a season-opening doubleheader in Charleston, S.C.
In game one, Terry Doyle got the start on the mound for the Eagles. He threw an efficient 6.2 innings, surrendering only five hits and two runs while striking out three.
Ruiz was the offensive catalyst, doubling home two runs in the top of the first inning. The Bucs tied it in the bottom of the six, but the Eagles scored once in each of the final three frames to win it. The game-winner came on a sacrifice fly by Dave Preziosi in the top of seventh, scoring freshman Eric Campbell.
Last year's bullpen workhorse, Kevin Boggan, struck out two in two innings of scoreless relief for the save.
Ruiz also got the Eagles started in game two, homering in the top of the first and beginning a six-run rally. Ruiz finished the day 5 for 10 with 5 RBI's.
Charleston Southern tied the game in the bottom of the fourth, but BC took advantage of two Bucs errors in its half of the fifth, posting six more runs and giving the Eagles the lead for good.
Hard-throwing Matt Meyer started game two and struck out seven batters in 3.2 innings of work. Freshman Michael Wanamaker earned the win, tossing 4.1 innings and surrendering one earned run.
Preseason all-American Jared McGuire went 2 for 5 in the second game with two RBI's and two runs scored. The Eagles compiled a total of 27 hits in both games, with Ryne Reynoso adding four, including a home run.
