Boston, Mass.--Sophomore Bob Dirks collected a pair of goals, and senior Caitlin Gillen and junior Crystal Frates each tallied a goal and an assist in Boston College field hockey's 4-0 win over Harvard University Wednesday evening at Jordan Field. The sixth-ranked Eagles bumped their record to 13-3 (2-2 ACC) and matched their 2005 win total. Harvard's overall record drops to 2-11.
Frates started the scoring at 1:13 when she intercepted a Crimson pass right outside the circle, dribbled uncontested up to Harvard goalkeeper Siobhan Connolly, and pushed the ball into the cage.
With 6:42 remaining in the first half, senior captain Lauren Parks fed the ball via the high hit from the left side of the field to Gillen who rushed the right side of the cage and tapped the ball in to score before Connolly could make the save. The half ended with the 2-0 Eagle lead. Boston College also had the 5-0 advantage in shots and 2-0 edge in penalty corners
Eight minutes into the second half, the Eagles converted a penalty corner to increase their lead to three goals. Dirks hammered the ball in on a direct shot while sophomore Katie Quaglia stopped the ball and Frates served the ball into play. On the fourth penalty corner in a row, Dirks struck again by drag-flicking a direct shot at 47:30. Gillen and Quaglia earned the assists.
Harvard's Tamara Sobek-Rosnick was fouled inside the circle with 13:05 left in regulation and was awarded a penalty shot. Her shot deflected straight down off the underside of the crossbar and stayed in play to give Eagle goalkeeper Julia Berkowitz the opportunity to make the save.
Berkowitz finished the game with one save and the shutout while Connolly made four stops and allowed four goals. The Eagles outshot the Crimson, 13-2, and took seven penalty corners to the Crimson's two.
Boston College will return to Newton to finish out the regular season beginning Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. against the University of New Hampshire. The Eagles will host Connecticut next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. and then ACC foe Wake Forest on Sunday, October 29 at 1:00 p.m.
