Newton, Mass.--Sophomore Bob Dirks scored two crucial goals, including her sixth gamewinner, and sophomore Kathleen Murphy tallied three points en route to sixth-ranked Boston College field hockey's 5-2 win over interstate rival University of New Hampshire Sunday afternoon on the Newton Campus Turf Field. The Eagles (14-3, 2-2) exceed their win total last year with their 14th victory of the season, while the Wildcats (1-15) add to the loss column.
Senior Caitlin Gillen, who transferred from UNH after her sophomore season, netted the first goal of the game at 27:06. Murphy picked up the assist after feeding a cross from the left of the circle for Gillen to one-time into the cage. Murphy scored her goal thirteen minutes later on a pass by freshman Chelsey Feole from the left post to put the Eagles up, 2-0.
The Wildcats, who took four shots in each half, tallied a goal during a penalty corner with time expired. UNH ended the half on Emily Colton's direct shot, with assists credited to Kiera William and Michelle Tavener for the stick stop and push-in, respectively.
UNH had the opportunity to tie the score up about six minutes into the second half. Boston College took a penalty corner, but a Wildcat took possession and sprinted up field with the ball. Eagle sophomore goalkeeper Julia Berkowitz came out to challenge, which gave Shauna Sellenger an angle to knock the ball into the empty net, but Sellenger's shot missed wide right.
Dirks' scored an unassisted goal, the eventual gamewinner, at 48:15 by breaking the circle, weaving through defenders, and knocking the ball into the net from about three yards out. Colton and Dirks exchanged goals 22 seconds apart from each other later in the period to bring the score to 4-2. UNH took a timeout with 4:06 remaining in the game, but the Eagles took advantage of the time to regroup and scored 30 seconds later. Junior Crystal Frates picked up a rebound at the goal line and tapped it in to finish the scoring.
Wildcat goalkeeper Margaux Shute finished with 12 saves in 68:18. Holly Schurk came in to play the final 1:42, but did not make any saves. Berkowitz made three stops and allowed two goals.
Boston College begins the final week of the regular season on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. The Eagles host the Connecticut Huskies on the Newton Campus Turf Field.
