Boston, Mass. - Boston College (1-1) earned its first victory of the young season by beating cross-town rival Boston University 1-0 at Nickerson Field.
The Eagles had a handful chances early on and finally connected just before halftime. At 41:56, freshman Greg O'Neil carried past defenders and laid a pass off for Brendon Ferullo who fed sophomore Sherron Manswell. Manswell would put it past B.U. keeper Chad Comroe for the only goal of the night and the sophomore's second of the season.
Shane Boggis filled in for Issey Maholo who sat out due to a red card suspension in the prior game. Boggis collected four saves in the victory and had a spectacular effort off a redirected corner kick in the first half to keep the game scoreless.
It was an impressive performance as Boston College was without the services of last year's leading scorer Charlie Davies, and freshmen Mike Konicoff and Joey Clarke, all out due to injury. A number of Eagles stepped up in their absence, producing nine shots and playing stifling defense. Freshman Paul Gerstenberger and junior Sam Brill were steady in the back.
Boston College will play its first home game of the season Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Quinnipiac.
