
Women's Track Fifth, Men 10th At Big East Championships

The women's track team finished in fifth place at the Big East Championships this weekend, improving upon last season's 11th-place showing.
The Eagles entered the third and final day of the meet in second place with 41.5 points. They scored 33 more points on Sunday, finishing behind fourth-place Rutgers. Pittsburgh won the outdoor team title with 176 points.
After turning in the top preliminary time in the 800 meters on Saturday, senior Melissa Sherman won the finals on Sunday with a mark of 2 minutes, 8.23 seconds. The performance was the best of the season for Sherman and the third fastest in BC history.
The 4x800-meter relay team of Sherman, freshman Mary Heitkamp, junior Alexis Lake and sophomore Kathleen Smyth earned eight points for the Eagles with a second-place finish. The time of 8.51.70 was a new school record for Boston College.
The Eagles scored 14 total points with three of the top seven finishers in the 5,000 meters. Junior Laurel Burdick finished second with a mark of 16:31.50 - the second-fastest mark in school history. Senior Maria Cicero was fifth with a time of 16:40.72 and junior Kristen Coon earned two points with a seventh-place finish in 17:11.80.
Senior Liz Hassan earned one point with an eighth-place showing in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing in 1:09.24.
The men's team finished 10th in the Championships, scoring 16 total points - 12 on Sunday.
Freshman Frank DiVittorio was less than one second behind the first-place finisher from Villanova, coming in fifth in the 800 meters with a mark of 1:53.28. The freshman earned four points for the Eagles.
Classmate Jeremy Zagorski also scored four points with a fifth-place finish in the 1,500 meters, coming in at 3:58.65.
The Eagles earned their final four points with seventh-place showings in the 4x400 and 4x800-meter relays.
