Boston College sophomore third baseman Jared McGuire (Harwich, Mass.) captured Big East Player of the Year honors and joined senior pitchers Joe Martinez (South Orange, N.J.) and Mike Wlodarczyk (Medford, N.J.) on the All-Big East First Team, as announced by the conference at a banquet prior to the start of the Big East Baseball Tournament.
McGuire becomes the first player in school history to capture Player of the Year honors. He led the Big East in hitting with a .397 average and finished the regular season with 81 hits, 50 runs scored and 40 RBI. McGuire stole a conference-best 14 bases in Big East contests and tied for the most overall swipes with 27 (in 29 attempts). One of three Eagles to start all 54 regular-season games, McGuire leads the team with a .559 slugging percentage and a .454 on-base percentage. His 81 hits and 27 stolen bases established new single-season school records.
Martinez was one of three unanimous selections to the All-Big East First Team. The right-handed pitcher has started 12 games, compiling an 8-3 record, and boasts a 2.63 ERA. Martinez ranks first in the conference with six complete games and two shutouts, second with 97 strikeouts, and third with 89 innings pitched. He was named Big East Pitcher of the Week twice this season (April 18 and May 16).
Wlodarczyk leads the league in wins, having posted a 10-2 record in 12 starts. The southpaw has collected a 2.96 ERA with 83 strikeouts in 79 innings this season. Both Wlodarczyk and Martinez lead the Eagles' staff with 12 starts apiece. Wlodarczyk finished the regular season with five complete games.
Senior center fielder Drew Locke (Weymouth, Mass.) and junior catcher Shawn McGill (South Kingston, R.I.) were named to the All-Big East Second Team, while senior left fielder Jason Delaney (Hanson, Mass.) and senior first baseman Dave Preziosi (Oradell, N.J.) captured All-Big East Third Team honors.
Locke and Delaney each started in all 54 of the team's regular-season games. Locke garners all-conference honors for the fourth consecutive season. He is hitting at a .304 clip, leads the Eagles with 18 doubles, ties for the team lead with 204 at-bats and ranks third with 42 runs scored, 62 hits, and 94 total bases. He established a new school career record for runs scored with 153 and is second on the all-time stolen bases list with 45.
McGill caught a pitching staff that finished first in the conference with 465 strikeouts and 13 complete games and ranked second with a 3.29 ERA. He played in 52 of the team's 54 games and finished the regular season with a .286 batting average, 10 doubles, two triples and 33 runs scored.
Delaney receives conference honors for the second consecutive season, having been named to the All-Big East First Team last season. This year, the left fielder ranks first on the team with eight home runs and 44 RBI and second on the squad with a .337 batting average, 47 runs scored, 67 hits, 12 doubles and 107 total bases. Delaney broke the school record for career hits with 256.
Preziosi played in all but one of the team's regular-season games and sports a .277 batting average. The first baseman has scored 30 runs, collected 53 hits and boasts a team-high 12 sacrifice hits.
